    Sectoral overview
    Viet Nam has 102 spinning factories, producing 260,000 tons of yarn; 135 weaving factories, producing 680 million square metres of fabric; and 56 knitting factories, producing 300,000 tons of product.

    The production capacity of fibre spinning is 72,000 tons per year, with an average Nm index of approximately 61. The fabric-weaving sector produces 380 million metres per year, including towelling and mosquito nets. The capacity of rounded knitted wear is 19,500 tons per year. Viet Nam can also produce other types of knitted wear, such as curtains, knitted mosquito nets, socks and woollen weaving, with a total capacity of 4,000 tons per year. The capacity for dyeing is the same as for weaving.

    Nha Trang Textile Company (Nhatexco) was established in 1982 as a State-owned company. It was privatized in 2006 to become a joint stock company. It is involved in the production of yarn, fabrics and garments. Currently it has 3,000 employees and exports US$ 22.2 million of PE yarn and garments per year. PE yarns are exported mainly to Chinese Taipei, Brazil and Colombia. Cotton yarn and mixed yarns are for domestic consumption.

    In the textile business, the Company produces:

     

    -2,500 tons of cotton Ne 8-50 per year
    -3,000 tons of polyester Ne 20-60 per year
    -3,500 tons of T/C Ne 30-60 per year
    -500 tons of CVC Ne 30-60 per year
    -500 tons of acrylic/cotton Ne 30-40 per year

    The company consumes 2,500-3,000 tons of uncarded and uncombed cotton per year, of which imports supply 95% and the Vietnam Cotton Company (VCC) provides 5%.

    The main supplying sources of uncarded and uncombed cotton for Nhatexco are India, Uzbekistan and the United States. Nhatexco's current import price is US$ 1,400 per ton on average.

    Nhatexco has its own import-export department in charge of both importing materials and exporting products. All import and export activities are undertaken through contract of goods and the usual mode of payment is by letter of credit (L/C).

    The Phong Phu Textile Corporation was established in 1988 as a joint venture between Phong Phu Textile Company and Coats Ltd of England. Phong Phu has a spinning mill built with a close-end production chain using technologies from Muratec (Japan) and Rieter (Germany).

    The company employs 6,383 workers and has an export turnover of US$ 80 million per year. Its main export market is the United States. It produces yarns, towels, denim fabrics, garments and sewing thread:

    -Cotton towel: 150 x 20 full container loads per month
    -Denims: 25 million metres per year; 6 million garments per year
    -Yarns and sewing threads: 2,000 tons per month
    -Yarn: Ne 6-40 in single and double
    -Sewing thread: Ne 20-80 in single, double and triple

    Phong Phu's yarn products are of cotton, PE, Visco, ring spun and combed cotton. It consumes 1,200 tons of uncombed cotton per month, of which 95% is imported from the United States and the remaining 5% is procured from the Vietnam Cotton Company.

    The import-export department of the company is responsible for all export and import activities as well as domestic sales and procurement. Import procurement is conducted through contract of goods and the usual mode of payment is by letter of credit (L/C).

    Case 3: Dong Nam Textile Company (Donatexco)

    The Dong Nam Textile Joint Stock Company was established in 1967 as a State-owned company. It was equitized in 2005 to become a joint stock company. It employs 1,000 workers and is involved in the production of yarns, knitted fabrics and garments.

    The company produces:

    -Yarns: 7,000 tons per year
    -Knitted fabrics: 300 tons per year

    It exports garment to the Republic of Korea, Chinese Taipei, Colombia and Germany.

    Dong Nam consumes 3,000 tons of uncarded and uncombed cotton per year, of which 95% is imported and 5% is bought from the Vietnam Cotton Company (VCC).

    Supplying sources of uncarded and uncombed cotton to the company were the United States, West Africa and East Africa.

    The import-export department of the company is responsible for all export and import activities as well as domestic sales and procurement. Import procurement is conducted through contract of goods and the usual mode of payment is by letter of credit (L/C).

    The Nam Dinh Silk Textile Joint Stock Company (Nasilkmex) was established in 1920. It was restored after the liberation of the country in 1954 and became a State-owned company. It was equitized in 2007 to become a joint stock company.

    Nasilkmex's products include:

    -Natural silk;
    -Visco rayon fabrics;
    -Polyester/woollen fabrics;
    -Fabrics made of T/C yarn, 100% cotton yarn, and petex yarn;
    -Yarn peco and PE with indexes.

    It has 1,453 employees and produces 850 tons of yarn and 6 million square metres of fabric per year. Its total turnover is US$ 3.9 million per year, of which export of PE and woollen fabrics makes up about US$ 300,000. Japan is the company's only export market for this product.

    Nasilkmex's total consumption of uncarded and uncombed cotton was 900 tons in 2003, 780 tons in 2004, 840 tons in 2005, and 900 tons in 2006, of which imports supplied 70% and the Vietnam Cotton Company (VCC) provided 30%.

    So far Nasilkmex imports uncarded and uncombed cotton only from the United States at an average import price of US$ 1,350 per ton.

    The Hanoi Textile Garment Company was established in 1991 as a State-owned company. It was equitized in 2005 to become a joint stock company. It has 5,500 employees. It is involved in the manufacture, trading, import and export of textiles and garment. Products of its textile business include:

    -Ring spun yarn:

    Core yarn (cotton+ spandex)

    It has the capacity to produce 12,000 tons of ring spun yarn per year using 112 spindles; 1,500 tons of twisted yarn per year using 6,080 spindles; and 500 tons of PE texture yarn.

    The company consumes 5,000 tons of uncarded and uncombed cotton per year. Its main supplying sources are the United States and India.

    The import-export department of the company is in charge of importing cotton materials. Import procurement is conducted through contract of goods and the usual mode of payment is by letter of credit (L/C).
